Fruits Basket (フルーツバスケット, Furūtsu Basuketto) sometimes abbreviated Furuba or Fruba (フルバ), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. It was serialized in the semi-monthly Japanese magazine Hana to Yume, published by Hakusensha, from 1999 to 2006. It is compiled into a total of 23 tankōbon volumes.

On September 4th, 2015, the first two volumes of Fruits Basket: Collector's Edition (愛蔵版 フルーツバスケット) were released in Japan under the Hana to Yume Comics Special imprint. It is to extend to twelve volumes in total.

The manga series was licensed in English in North America and the United Kingdom by Tokyopop. After Tokyopop ceased publication, the Collector's Edition series was re-licensed in North America by Yen Press.

The Fruits Basket manga received a 26-episode anime adaptation in 2001. It later received a 63-episode reboot in 2019 which adapts the entire manga.

In 2015, Natsuki Takaya began serialization of a sequel titled Fruits Basket Another in HanaLaLaOnline. She has also written a spin-off story, named the Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc.

Plot[]

Although the 2001 anime is based on the first 8 volumes (the anime ends at halfway through book 8), there are some differences in the stories, such as Akito's life being short due to the curse and his still being male.

Each volume cover features main characters from the series. From volume 2 to 14, the covers are the characters who are cursed and they are used as the cover character in the order of which Tohru has met them. Volumes 15 and on feature Akito Sohma, Kazuma Sohma, Tohru's friends (Saki Hanajima and Arisa Uotani), Yuki's two new friends from student council (Kakeru Manabe and Machi Kuragi), Ren Sohma, and Tohru's parents (Katsuya Honda and Kyoko Honda; not in order).

Trivia[]

  • The series' title comes from the name of a popular game played in Japanese elementary schools, which is alluded to in the series.
    • This is also connected to the protagonist Tohru's situation, as she was described as being a rice ball in a basket full of fruits (as in, she does not fit in). That is, until she meets the Sohma Family.
  • Takaya has stated in multiple interviews that the story of Fruits Basket that she always intended to write didn’t change in any major ways during the eight years that it took to write it. She says the story she envisioned from the beginning is the story she got to tell in the end.
